For many years I owned and operated a repair shop, Quality Automotive, here in Maryland. We specialized in Volvos but also serviced a good number of Saabs, Mercedes, BMW's, and other imports. I think our shop was unique in that, as the owner I had a Master's Degree in Fine Art as well as an ASE Master Technician Certification. I related to my customers and their cars on many levels and was honest to a fault. Anyway, with respect to the 240 exhaust, it was my belief that my customers got the best value if they purchased Original Volvo replacement mufflers and pipes. Volvo offered a lifetime warranty on their well-made mufflers and one year on the pipes and other components. I have seen much of the exhaust work from “Specialty Shops” and usually found their mufflers and pipes to be inferior. Correct mounting hardware was seldom used; usually they just reused the old stuff that was on the car. Improperly bent pipes along with poorly fitting mufflers, resulted in the system being hung wrong, which was sure to cause problems down the road. Now these shops had impressive guarantees; and if you kept all your paper work, you would feel that the free muffler you got after 14 months, was a good deal. Ah, but here's the rub: Almost always, along with that free muffler is the need to replace at least one pipe and some clamps. This is where things get interesting. Let's say you go into Muffler Man to have what you think is a free muffler replacement. Most places charge labor to replace warranty parts, so under the best circumstances you have a bill for one hour labor and a new muffler. Not bad. If this happens every two or three years you are doing good. Usually life isn’t that simple. Let me give you another scenario, and believe me, this has happened. Here you are, flying down the beltway in your GL. The cruise is on, the heated seat is working, you are listening to your favorite song on the radio and life is sweet. All of a sudden, WHAM, you hit a big pothole, your engine is roaring and life is quickly turning to crap as you pull off the to the side of the road. You get out of your car and see your dirty, rusty, steaming muffler in the middle of lane three on the Washington Beltway. You risk your life, dodging traffic trying to pick up this filthy muffler. Then as you get to the side of the road, you trip, fall, and rip the knee in your new suit. Undaunted, you throw the muffler in the trunk and roar off to the Muffler Man. With your warranty in hand and muffler in trunk you confidently walk into the muffler shop. As you tell the person behind the counter about your life and death struggle with the three lanes of rush hour traffic, he slowly raises his eyes and mutters "Sorry, the warranty doesn't cover potholes, but let's put her in the air and see what we have." Ten minutes later he calls you out to the garage to see the damage. The muffler you almost died for is junk, crushed beyond use. The pipes leading in and out of the muffler are also damaged. (I wish I could have the sound of a cash register ringing in the background.) You look at the remaining muffler and say, "At least this muffler is still good." Not so fast there. “Taking the remaining pieces of pipe out of that muffler will be tricky. I will do my best”. Well, we all know that the remaining muffler broke while taking the pipe out of its inlet. Does the warranty cover this? No way! Now let's see how you made out. Two new mufflers, new pipes that go in and out of the front muffler and four new clamps. (Where is that cash register sound?) The only part they could reuse was the two foot piece of pipe called a tail pipe. As you walk out the door, (knee still bleeding), the salesman says, “Hey, don't forget your warranty.” Well has any of this hit home with anyone out there yet? OK, lets go to my old shop where I really believe that original Volvo exhaust kits and components where the only way to go. Why? Better mufflers, not just a beer can with ends but a well-made unit with some engineering involved in it. Better pipes, good Swedish steel that lasts. Great fit, never a problem putting them together; and last, a warranty that is honored by all Volvo dealers in North America, if not the world. We confidently sold these mufflers and pipes. The time between muffler or pipe failure was much longer than with other brands. But fail they did and we still made money fixing these systems. However if my reason for having my own business was solely to make money, another brand would have done me better. I believe that part of my job was to provide the very best for my customers. Well, I don't service cars any longer and have let my Master Tech status expire, but for some reason I still believe I have to provide the very best for my customers. That's why we have put together a stainless steel exhaust system for the 240 cars that will really last, and in the long run, cost less than any steel / aluminized system out there. Once installed, this should be the last system you buy for that 240! Can you imagine? No more exhaust problems! So here I am, talking to you like the caring individual that I am.
Buy this system and I know you will be glad you did. We currently have
systems from the catalytic converter back, for the following years.
All these stainless steel systems are made as original for a great fit.
